Elfa International AB's invention addresses the challenge of creating a nearly continuous top surface when multiple shelves share a common U-section bracket. Each side piece of the sheet metal shelf incorporates a horizontal top flange covering the main piece's side edge, an inclined intermediate section (15–60°, preferably 45–55°), and a vertical connector section that is thereby recessed inward beneath the side edge. Because the connector sections of two neighbouring shelves are both retracted under their respective side edges, the gap between adjacent shelf surfaces is far smaller than the bracket wall-to-wall distance. The main piece may be formed from expanded metal mesh, optionally stiffened by a welded reinforcement beam whose ends attach to bottom flanges of the side pieces.
